Want to know more about nonprofit organizations and resources around Portland? Join us for the second in our series of nonprofit tours! On Tuesday, September 18th, we'll learn more about SMART - Start Making a Reader Today.
The tour will begin at 5:30 PM and attendees will network, see SMART's facilities, and learn more about opportunities to get involved. Light snacks and drinks provided.
Location: 101 SW Market St., Portland
SMART’s office is centrally located on the corner of SW 1st and Market Streets, situated on the ground level of the northwest corner of the intersection. There is parking available in the garage above the office, but the most cost-effective option is street parking in the surrounding area. The office is within walking distance of all Trimet Max lines, the many bus lines serving downtown Portland, and the Portland Streetcar. You can use Trimet’s trip planner online to find the most convenient transit route for you.
Leading research proves that shared book reading and the availability of books in the home are the strongest predictors of early literacy skills. With this at our core, SMART (Start Making A Reader Today)® launched in 1992 to empower Oregon children through reading support and access to books. We pair adult volunteers with PreK through third-grade students for shared reading time, helping them build reading skills and motivation, and discover a lifelong love of reading in a fun, culturally-affirming environment. Since our founding, SMART has served over 210,000 children with the help of over 130,000 volunteers, and has given away nearly 3 million books.
